Doing Some Reuzing - Up-cycling!

A few years ago on tight budget at school I had to get creative and find fabulous fabric for students to turn into something special for next to no cost! Solution recycle unwanted clothing & bedding! I teach, sometimes hard to please, adolescents so it wasn't an easy task convincing them that their Dad's old jeans or shirt really would look amazing as a hand bag or A-line skirt! Since those early days I have been crafting and creating interesting and inspiring garments to encourage my students to think outside the box, save money and maybe play a part in affecting a holistically healthier environment!

With that in mind and fresh supply of tailored shirt hand me downs (or hand me ups - depending on your life perspective) I present to you my latest up-cycled creation!

One Ben Sherman tailored men's shirt - kindly donated by my son :-)

Using Vogue Misses 8766 I cut the bodice of the dress from the shirt sleeves ...

... although I didn't quite have enough to cut the centre panel so I cut that from the back yoke and incorporated the hanger loop as a feature! Mr SS says it makes him think the dress is on back to front - I think that's awesome because it means people will look twice - that I have created something that might just cause thought and conversation!

The skirt I made by cutting across the bottom of the body of the shirt just under the arm, sewing down either side of the button stand and gathering the top to fit the bodice. I inserted the zip by just cutting straight down the back of the skirt panel the required length - easy!

... and the finished product

I insersted the collar/button stand between the bodice front and lining and then to get this look I cross the collar and pinned it. The collar can be warn open also like a halter neck style. In hindsight I would have made this feature detachable by attaching a button to the bodice lining!

All in all its not a bad job ... because I redrafted the pattern (just a little) it doesn't fit as snuggly across the bust as I would like (not that it falls down or even feels like it will, it has boning in the side seams) I will be doing some unpicking and a little reworking over the coming weekend - just to make it perfect!
